It is 2 pm. You have no hard deadlines today and it is Thursday. That is basically Friday, which is basically the weekend… right?
That is how it starts for me. I start to find distractions, the TV, YouTube, Twitter. All of the sudden it is the end of the day and that thing I wanted to finish is left undone.
Now I have to leave the coffee shop I was sitting at and go somewhere else. I want to enjoy time relaxing with friends and family, but that unfinished task is nagging me.
How do we avoid this? Community.
Community can provide an amazing amount of positive pressure on us. You look up and see that someone you know across the room is hard at work. You are reminded that later that week the people in your morning business group will be asking about your progress towards your goals. You close the distraction and refocus.
I am not against taking breaks, but we all can tell the difference (at least in hind sight) when it was a needed break and when we were just wasting time.
That is another advantage of coworking. A community of people approaching work in a similar way while having diverse backgrounds and working in many industries. Together we can provide that positive pressure that helps us each stay on task.
If you want to be a part of building this kind of community we are meeting at the Easy Chair Coffee Shop from 2 – 5:30 pm today. Come for as little or as long as you want. Then around 5:30 we are going to leave and head over to “Up on the Roof.”
How do you stay focused when you want to do all those other random things that take up our time?
